Emmanuel Bristol is a family of churches working together to make more disciples, who will plant more churches, to show more people that Jesus is Lord.

The staff team talk about… bible reading and meditation

We’re aware that our personal walk with the Lord is the first thing that makes or breaks our witness to Christ and service of our church families, so the Emmanuel staff team are starting the year by sharing practices and resources that have helped us over the last year personally listen to the Lord and pray.  And I thought I’d share them in case they’re helpful.  This week: bible reading and meditation.

Practices we’ve tried:

  • Reading through the bible cover to cover (alongside friends too), at various speeds (3 months to 3 years!)
  • When reading larger chunks, then zooming in on a verse/truth:
    • How does this verse drive me to Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication (ACTS)?*
    • Why might God have said this to me today?*
    • Repeat the verse a number of times, with the emphasis on a different word each time*
    • Write it down in a notebook and come back to it at every opportunity during the day
  • Using Monday morning devotional time to go through the sermon passage again, taking it in and praying
  • Doing something different on days off / Sundays – reading a sermon / chapter of a book etc
  • Doing something different when on holiday / routine changes
    • Memorise a chunk of the bible, a verse a day
  • Reading along with a friend for mutual encouragement and accountability

* suggestions from Tim Keller’s book Prayer

Resources we’ve found helpful:

  • Study bible with its notes (Zondervan’s new NIV study bible was recommended)
  • Readers bible (single column with no headings, verse/chapter numbers – like a book!)
  • Prayer cards (in the evenings, or for a change of routine, or under pressured time), also on the blog
  • David Suchet reading to you – NIV mp3/CDs or on Bible Gateway (audio for NIVUK)
  • Bible Project app
  • You Version app – link with another friend and so accountability
  • EW Read Through the Bible blog ‘The Jesus Book
  • Bible reading notes – Explore app
  • Book by Book’ DVDs with study guide (biblicalframeworks.com)
