#RenewYourMind – “Disability & the Gospel”

“A book is not paper, and colours and ink,
It is dreams and ideas that lead you to think.

The staff team read through about 10-15 books and articles together a year and meet up each week to talk through what we’ve read: what we liked and didn’t, where it connects with our lives, ministries, churches, culture, and what has caused us to think and act differently.  We have so much fun doing it that we’d love to have fun with you too.  So, inspired by the video above, we’re launching #RenewYourMind.  Each term one of the staff team will pick a book that we’re reading, pick an time to talk about it, and stick a blog post up to find people up for reading the book too.  As we read, anyone can share quotes/thoughts on a whatsapp group, and then we’ll meet up at the end to chat and pray.

For our first attempt at this, Zoe Holland and I are hosting a morning for anyone who has read Michael S. Beates’ book Disability & the Gospel.  Here’s the blurb from the back:

“Michael Beates’s concern with disability issues began nearly 30 years ago when his eldest child was born with multiple profound disabilities. Now, as more families like his are affected by a growing number of difficulties ranging from down syndrome to autism to food allergies, the need for church programs and personal paradigm shifts is greater than ever.”

Working through key Bible passages on brokenness and disability while answering hard questions, Michael offers helpful principles for believers and their churches. He shows us how to embrace our own brokenness and then to embrace those who are more physically and visibly broken, bringing hope and vision to those of us who need it most.”

Up for it?  Click here to buy your book, and go to churchsuite or click here to either join the whatsapp chat and/or book a spot at book chat on Sunday January 27th, 9.30-10.45 am (or indicate you can’t make that time).  Venue probably Zoe’s place near Kellaway, but if we’re too big we’ll have to find a bigger sitting room!

If you can’t make the morning book chat, please do read along with the staff team and everyone else, and join in the chat on whatsapp.  If you need a lift, please email elliem@emmanuelbristol.org.uk.
